Rabbi Judith Kummer's class finished with a bang last night, drawing nearly a minyan. I managed to attend all three classes. Rabbi Kummer introduced little-known quotes from the Rabbinic tradition, some astonishing in their modernism, and also brought us to examine extremely familiar texts in a new light, such as the creation of the universe in Genesis. We drew some principles--new mitzvot, one might say--from the texts. These included treating animals with compassion, making sure the earth stays fertile, treating everyone justly, and--of course--eliminating waste. Thanks go to the Synagogue Council of Massaschusetts for cosponsoring the class and offering JCAN their space in Newton Center.
